Dec 09When it was time to take my options at school I was thirteen. I chose Metalwork along with motor vehicle studies as this was my passion and I wanted to be a mechanic when I grew up. I then chose physics and history as I could find nothing better to go with my other choice of computer studies. Now I have no idea why I fancied computer studies, however, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Looking back my choice of this subject was no doubt to allow for a couple more chalkie moments. In 76, the year of the long hot summer, we had spent many a summers day on Barr Beacon. The “Beacon” as we called it was just the other side of the fields at the back of our house. It was the highest point around and was so named because many years before it had been used as a beacon, a hill where a large fire was lit to pass messages around the country.
